Roman Food

The Romans ate a diet of vegetables, meat and fish. The poor romans ate quite simple meals, but the rich ate a range of meals. Romans ate three meals a day. They ate breakfast (ientaculum), lunch (prandium) and dinner (cena). Cena was the main meal with the most food. The Romans did not sit at a table to eat their meals. They spread out on couches around a low table. Different fruits and vegetables were eaten by the Romans. They would have carrots, radishes, beans, apples, pears, plums, pumpkin, olives, and mushrooms. The Romans kept animals for their meat. The rich ate beef, pork, boar, hare, chicken, geese and peacock. A lot of seafood was eaten by the Romans. They enjoyed shellfish and fish. Bread was a huge part of the Roman diet. It was part of almost every meal. The most interesting thing I learned was that they did sit at a table to eat their meals.

  1. I find it very interesting that the rich ate such a wide variety of food, many times the meat they were eating was very unhealthy since they did not have effective preserving methods. This actually seems to make it healthier for the poor since they ate mostly fruits and vegetables.

  2. All of those different types of food seem delicious!
Try to make your paper, in general, a bit longer, though(with more details).
    When was Cena eaten?

  3. Its very cool that many Romans who had a lot of money tried many different ways of eating. Its also interesting that no matter your wealth, you all ate the same way. People would think that only the wealthy would eat like that but it really shows that it is part of the everyday culture not top eat around a table.

  5. I agree with Nick in that the people of Rome tried many different forms of food and I found this interesting. Trying new foods is a large part of our culture today and that connects the past and present.
