Latin Business and Stock Market

I was interested in the history of Roman business because personally, I want to get involved in business when I'm older and I wanted to see the impact an ancient stock market would have on Roman society.  Authors stated the main exports of Roman trade were pottery, wines, beef, and other food sources (Ancient Rome and Trade). They would invest in boats to navigate through the Mediterranean sea and English Channel where they traded with Britain, North Africa, Spain, and some Middle Eastern countries. On rare occurrences piracy plagued the Mediterranean and many lives were lost in those encounters.

In our own lives today the export and import system that fueled Roman economy is similar to that of ours today. We all export and import goods to other countries to such as cars and other goods. This ancient system of trade is still influential today.

I decided to write a short story about our books main character, Caecilius, inventing a stock market. He became known as "The Wolf of Pompeii". He decided trade would be easier if you could invest in local businesses and put news on the wall paintings to avoid piracy and losing money. Caecilius was able to discover the money made in local trade and make his way up to a wealthier status. My short story can be found here.

  1. It is interesting how similar the stock market today is to the stock market then except our stock market is much more advanced. Stocks can be traded a lot quicker online and it is much easier for goods to be transported with more efficient boats and planes.

  2. I would have never even thought of the fact that there was a thing such as a stock market in ancient Roman times. It's funny how simple their stock market was and how simple the stocks that they were buying and selling were. Today there are millions of different stocks to buy. It is truly amazing how diverse the stock market became.

  3. The trade process is still pretty similar today. Boats are still used for transportation of goods as well as trucks.
